Three lessons I learned that helped me reclaim a positive mindset.
Last week was a “sh*# show,” or so I thought….
I facilitated a workshop that didn’t go exactly as planned.
Afterward my inner critic came out in full force leaving me feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and full of self-doubt.
By listening to my harsh inner judge and my “stickler” saboteur who wants everything to be perfect, I was convinced that the event was a failure.
So I reached out to a participant for honest feedback and prepared myself for the critique.
Much to my surprise and relief the response was overwhelmingly positive.
I was reminded once again that my negative “judgy” thoughts were all a bunch of self-sabotaging lies and I was making myself miserable by believing them!
WHAT I LEARNED?
STOP believing the lies. It’s only when you tell the critical voices in your head to take a hike, that you can be fully present with “what is” and enjoy the experience – imperfections and all.
STOP striving for perfection. Things can go imperfectly AND still be successful and valuable. Said another way, striving for perfection does not bring success and happiness because perfection is unrealistic and unattainable.
START choosing your thoughts wisely. Whatever you believe becomes true. Your thoughts are a self-fulfilling prophecy. Do they serve your or sabotage you? You always have a choice as to what you believe and the lens through which you see the world.
The key is to not only get better at recognizing the lies your saboteurs tell you but also get better at dismissing them.
HOW? By developing Mental Fitness to overcome your fears, shift your negative inner dialogue, and finally break your patterns of self-sabotage.
THE RESULT? So much less stress, self-doubt, anxiety, shame, and guilt.
